Almost nothing is known of Elinor Pruitt Stewart's early life. She was one of six children who were raised by their grandparents after their parents died "within a year of each other." She grew up in Indian Territory (Oklahoma), married, but lost her first husband in a railroad accident. In 1909 Elinore went to work for Clyde Stewart, at his isolated ranch in Wyoming. Six weeks later she married the 41 year old widower. Over the next few years the couple had four children. The first one died but the three boys survived childhood.
